AMP pages
Why Consider AMP? Mobile devices accounted for >80% of most medial websites web traffic in 2022 — up 15% from 2019. AMP pages provide better SEO, higher search rankings and a 30% increase in search traffic on average by maximising Introduction to Core Web Vitals score.
Pages that implement AMP are pre-loaded from Google’s fast CDN servers by default, leading to near-instant load time
Google noticed this shift early on and created the Accelerated Mobile Pages framework for websites to optimise the mobile experience and increase performance. To incentivise sites to become mobile-friendly, Google now prioritises pages based on their mobile experience and page speed.
Google rolled out Core Web Vitals, an evaluation method that penalises sites that do not offer superb mobile user experience. AMP pages are inherently mobile-optimised, and rank higher in Google’s search results.
When a website is optimised for AMP your will see the ‘accelerated page’ badge next to their pages in Google’s search results and see your results show up high in the top stories carousel. When you click a result, your will feel how fast the page opens, thanks to AMP’s pre-loading and see the advantage they gain over the sites.
Near-identical AMP pages matches your HTML. The technique is officially recognised by Google for creating and maintaining an AMP version that is near-identical to the HTML version.
Add Google Amplify to your website for full Google Compliance. AMP pages have to abide by a strict set of rules to be considered AMP valid and enjoy the AMP benefits. The most common AMP validation issue is a CSS file that exceeds 75kb. This usually happens on three web pages: Pages with many widgets, Pages with a high level of customisation (e.g. multiple SVG images or a multitude of elements with varying CSS properties). and Some pages with 3rd party tools sometimes have a heavy CSS payload.
More technically, the more selectors a CSS file has, and the more variance there is between those selectors, the higher the probability is for a CSS to be heavier than the 75kb allowed. Most pages don't reach this level of complexity - but if a page does reach it, there are two options to change the page itself by removing unused elements like 3rd party widgets or redundant popups, or to skip that page and amplifying the parts of the site which are adequate for AMP.
